The first molds in the Classic series (1:12 scale), the Bucking Bronco and the Rearing Stallion, appeared during the 1960s. It wasn't until several years later in 1973 that Breyer first officially designated molds to be of the Classic series with the introduction of the Arabian Stallion, Mare, and Foal. In 2019 the series was renamed the Freedom Series. Breyer explains: "Freedom Series stands for one of the strongest attributes ascribed to horses – freedom! The freedom to go on adventures, explore and dream. Horses inspire us like no other animal in the world. Freedom Series was designed to capture the power that only horses deliver."
While I have been a collector since the early 1970s, my knowledge of the details and variations on many early models is sparse, and I am deeply grateful to Nancy Atkinson Young and her excellent book, Breyer Molds and Models: Horses, Riders, & Animals, Revised Fifth Edition.
